Veterinary acupuncture: beyond pain management

Acupuncture is not only for people. And it is not only for pain management either. Humans, cats, dogs, horses, rabbits, wildlife – vital energy, or Qi, flows through us all. That is why acupuncture is an effective part of restoring and maintaining wellness for pets as well as their people. Using tiny, sterile needles in energetically significant points on the skin to help strengthen or heal corresponding body fluids, tissues or organ systems is one way to describe the acupuncture component of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Integrative veterinarian and naturopathic doctor (for people), Dr. Steve Marsden, explains that the popular pain relief aspect of acupuncture is more of a side effect. Another very significant benefit is in addressing the underlying disharmony in the body. Helping Qi and Blood to flow and integrating the organs with each other and their external environment has effects that outlast the temporary endorphin release immediately following an acupuncture treatment.

You may have already heard of the benefits of acupuncture as part of a holistic or integrative approach to pain management for arthritis. So, what other common conditions can we look at with a Traditional Chinese Medical approach? Allergic conditions, digestive issues, urinary incontinence, seizures, asthma and cancer are all situations where using the best of both eastern and western medicine is the most effective way to help our pets. Of course, acupuncture is not a silver bullet. Regardless of the modality, diet (including appropriate nutritional supplements) and possibly lifestyle changes are essential when managing illness.
